Black Rock CBS Building Lobby Chandelier
Project type
Office Lobby
Date
2021
Location
New York City, NY, United States.
Material
304 Stainless Steel Coils, PCB Board.
Located within CBS Building (Black Rock), the lobby is defined by a strict architectural order and a restrained material palette. The chandelier is introduced with the same discipline—positioned not as an object of contrast, but as a continuation of spatial logic.
Manufactured by YAOJUN BUILD, the piece translates design intent into a precise, buildable system at architectural scale. Geometry, proportion, and suspension are carefully resolved to align seamlessly with the existing structure.
Material, Scale, Control
The cage structure is formed through a custom coil fabrication process, allowing the bronze-plated metal to achieve both continuity and structural clarity at scale.
Conductivity is preserved within the metal framework, enabling the structure itself to participate in the electrical system.
To organize and stabilize the overall power distribution, a bespoke insulated PCB system is integrated within the chandelier—precisely engineered to manage load while remaining visually unobtrusive.
Attention extends to the smallest elements:
even the PCB boards are custom-finished to match the tone of the metal wires, maintaining a consistent material language throughout.
Beyond Fabrication
Consideration extends beyond completion to long-term use.
A dedicated “electric magic wand” tool was developed to access light sources positioned deep within the structure. Delivered together with the installation, it ensures that all bulbs remain serviceable without compromising the integrity of the piece.
A Measured Presence
The intervention operates through precision rather than excess—
allowing light, proportion, and material continuity to define the space with clarity.
